Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have never taken online lessons before. What is the first step?
A: To begin with, fill out the contact form to make an inquiry!

Q: I am outside of the Central Time Zone. Can I still take lessons?
A: Absolutely! Students are welcome from Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Time Zones will be carefully accounted for when setting up a lesson schedule.

Q: What if I don't have an instrument?
A:
No problem! Fill out the contact form with your inquiry, and we can help you to find the proper instrument and equipment for you in your area.

Q: If I am under the age of 18, can I still take lessons?
A: You definitely can! You will need to ask your parent or guardian for permission, as they will need to sign the studio lessons agreement contract.

Q: What experience do the Juliani Ensemble teachers have?
A:
Our instructors represent esteemed institutions such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Eastman School of Music, and The University of Michigan, providing a combined 100+ years of teaching experience. We love teaching students of all levels!

Q: I already know that I am interested in long-term lessons. How do I sign up?
A: That is wonderful! Before committing to a semester of lessons, we prefer to complete an individual lesson so that student and teacher may have the opportunity to get well acquainted. After this, you may sign up for a long term lesson schedule.

Q: How long is each lesson?
A: We offer 30-, 45- and 1 hour long lessons, depending on the student's level, availability, and goals.

Q: Where do lessons take place?
A: At the moment, lessons take place over Zoom, but if not convenient, we can discuss the best platform for you.

Q: How does billing work for lessons?
A: The billing period for lessons occurs at the beginning of each semester of lessons.
Semester I runs September-January. Semester II runs January-May. The Summer Semester runs May-September. You are welcome to join at any time!

As previously mentioned, your first 2-3 lessons are a chance for you to acquaint yourself with your new teacher, before committing to a semester of lessons. These lessons will be billed individually.

Q: What payment forms do you accept?
A: You will be sent an invoice for each trial lesson/semester of lessons, which you can pay via Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, Chase Pay, or personal check. We will work together to devise the best method for you.

Q: I live in Chicago/I am visiting the area. Can I have an in-person lesson?
A: In-person lessons are not available at the moment, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but will return once circumstances are safe.

Q: What is the Student Information Form?
A: The Student Information Form helps us get to know you better, regarding your goals and experience, as well as your location and Time Zone, your age, and your contact information for when your first lesson takes place.

Q: What is the Studio Contract?
A:
If you decide to partake in regular lessons, we will ask you to read and complete our Studio Contract: this allows us to have clear and concise communication with each student (or student's parent/guardian) about the expectations and goals involved in studying with a member of the Juliani Ensemble.

Q: What should I prepare for the first lesson?
A: You should bring anything that you feel comfortable playing. That may be a piece, a scale, or an exercise. If you are a beginner, just bring yourself, and we will discuss how to start your musical journey. Regardless of your level, we are looking forward to helping you learn and improve!
